๐Ÿ“˜ THE DEEP DIVE ยท WEDNESDAY TUTORIAL ยท ISSUE #013

๐Ÿ‘‹ HEY, IT'S RAJA

On Monday you checked Full Disk Access. Today, the 3 AI agents most likely to ask for it, and what each one can actually see once you say yes.

They work in very different ways, and the permission prompt does not tell you which kind you are dealing with. Ten minutes with this issue and you will know.

Your AI prompts are leaving out 80% of what you're thinking.

When you type a prompt, you summarize. When you speak one, you explain. Wispr Flow captures your full reasoning (constraints, edge cases, examples, tone) and turns it into clean, structured text you paste into ChatGPT, Claude, or any AI tool. The difference shows up immediately. More context in, fewer follow-ups out.

Used by teams at Microsoft, Amazon, and Notion. Try Wispr Flow free on Mac, Windows, iPhone, and Android.

๐Ÿ“˜ What 3 AI agents can actually see on your Mac

Meta Muse, ChatGPT Dots and Claude Cowork, and the settings that decide how far each one reaches.

The 3 levels of access

Every Mac agent sits somewhere on this ladder. The higher it sits, the more it can see without asking you again.

Level 1, folders you pick. The agent sees the folders you hand it and nothing else.

Level 2, your screen and controls. Screen Recording and Accessibility let an app see whatever is on screen and click and type for you. It is limited to what is open, but anything open counts.

Level 3, Full Disk Access. Mail, Messages, Safari history and every file in your user folder, all readable at once.

Meta Muse

Muse launched for Mac in September and quickly became the reason Apple spoke up. Meta's position is that Muse reads your Messages only if you turn on two things: Full Disk Access in System Settings and the Messages connector inside Muse. Granting Full Disk Access sends you into System Settings to confirm with your password or Touch ID, and the app restarts.

Inc. columnist Jason Aten says Muse synced his Messages database up to row 187,462 while Full Disk Access showed as off. Meta says that cannot happen. Nobody has published logs that settle it.

Where it sits: Level 3 if you grant it. Unless you specifically want Muse working with your texts, do not give it Full Disk Access, and if you already did without a reason, switch it off.

ChatGPT Dots

Dots are OpenAI's always-on agents, and each one runs on its own computer in the cloud. Out of the box, a Dot cannot touch your Mac's files or apps at all. You can connect your Mac so the Dot works on it alongside its own virtual machine, and that connection needs the ChatGPT app open on that Mac.

Once connected, a Dot can reach your local files and fall back to your browser. To see and control apps it relies on Screen Recording and Accessibility, and it asks before it uses each app, with an Always allow option.

Where it sits: Level 1 to 2, depending on what you connect. The setting to watch is Always allow. It is convenient, and it is also how a one-time yes quietly becomes permanent.

Claude Cowork

Since July 7, Cowork sessions run in the cloud by default, which is also why they keep going after you close the laptop. When you run one locally instead, Cowork works inside a Linux virtual machine on your Mac and only sees the folders you connect.

That boundary was tested in July. Security firm Accomplish AI showed that a local session could break out of the virtual machine and reach files across the Mac. Cloud sessions being the default sidesteps that route. Local sessions still depend on the virtual machine holding.

Where it sits: Level 1. One piece of forum advice to ignore: giving Claude Full Disk Access to fix errors with OneDrive or Dropbox folders. Move the working folder somewhere local instead.

The 5-minute permission audit

  1. Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security.

  2. Full Disk Access: remove any AI app that is not doing a specific job that needs it.

  3. Screen & System Audio Recording: same rule. Anything here can see whatever is on your screen.

  4. Accessibility: anything here can click and type for you, so keep this list short.

  5. Files & Folders: check which folders each app can open, and narrow them.

โ

โš ๏ธ The Muse dispute is still one journalist's account against one company's denial. The audit is worth doing either way. The point is not whether Muse misbehaved. The point is that you should know what you said yes to.

The rule worth keeping

Give an agent the lowest level that gets the job done, for the job in front of you. A folder for a folder task. Screen access for a screen task. Full Disk Access for almost nothing.

Set Cowork up properly from day one

Cowork Mastery is my full guide to Claude Cowork on the Mac. Which folders to connect, the context files Claude reads before every task, ready-to-use workflows, and the scheduled tasks that run without you, all set up the right way the first time.

Run the audit once. It takes less time than this issue did.

On Friday, 5 new Mac apps from the first week of October, all from small developers.

Keep it useful,
