On August 25, Apple did something slightly unusual. It announced its most significant Mac silicon jump in years by press release, two weeks before a keynote, with pre-orders opening the same morning.
New Mac mini with the M6. New Mac Studio with the M5 Max and M5 Ultra. Both ship September 22. The headline number is that the M6 delivers up to four times faster AI performance than the M4 it replaces.
The Mac mini also now starts at $899. In May it was $599.
So today's issue is a question rather than a review: what does four times faster AI actually buy you, and is it buying anything for you specifically? I think for most people reading this the answer is no, and I want to explain why carefully, because "faster AI" is about to be the reason a lot of people spend money they did not need to spend.

What the M6 actually does, who it is genuinely for, and the cheaper thing to fix first.
What Apple shipped
The M6 is Apple's first chip built on a 2nm process. It has a 12-core CPU, a 12-core GPU, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine, with up to 32GB of unified memory. Against the M4 Mac mini, Apple claims up to 40% faster CPU, twice the graphics performance, twice the storage performance, and up to four times the AI performance. The mini also picks up Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and 2.5Gb Ethernet.
The Mac Studio is the more dramatic machine. The M5 Ultra is Apple's first quad-die chip, fusing two dual-die M5 Max processors with a new version of the UltraFusion interconnect, reaching an 80-core GPU and up to 512GB of unified memory. That is a workstation, and it is priced like one.
Now the prices
This is the part that deserves as much attention as the benchmarks.
Mac mini M6: from $899 with 16GB and 256GB storage. The 512GB version is $1,099.
Mac mini M5 Pro: from $1,699.
Mac Studio M5 Max: $2,499.
Mac Studio M5 Ultra: $5,499. The 512GB memory configuration arrives in late October.
The Mac mini's recent history is worth laying out plainly. It was $599. In June, Apple raised prices across the Mac line, blaming an unprecedented rise in component costs and particularly RAM, and the mini went to $799. This announcement adds another $100. That is a 50% increase on the entry price in about four months, on a machine whose entire identity was being the affordable Mac.
💡 The memory shortage is real and it is industry-wide, not an Apple invention. It is also why price rises are expected on the iPhones next week. If you have been waiting for prices to settle before buying anything, the honest advice is that nobody currently expects them to.
What "four times faster AI" actually means
Here is the distinction that the marketing does not make, and it decides whether this upgrade is for you.
The Neural Engine accelerates AI that runs on your machine. Apple Intelligence features, on-device photo processing, dictation, live translation, and if you are the sort of person who does this, local language models run through something like Ollama or LM Studio.
It does approximately nothing for AI that runs in a data centre. When you use Claude, or ChatGPT, or any other cloud assistant, the model is not running on your Mac. Your Mac is displaying text that arrived over the internet. A four times faster Neural Engine will not make Claude answer faster, think better, or handle a longer document. That work is happening 8,000 miles away on hardware you are renting by the month.
Apple is explicitly chasing a real market here: developers and small AI shops who want local compute rather than renting cloud GPUs. That is a genuine and growing group. It is also, I would guess, well under five percent of the people reading this newsletter.
So who should actually buy one
Buy the M6 mini or a new Studio if: you run local models on your own hardware, you work in video, 3D or heavy photography, you are compiling large projects, or you are replacing a machine that is genuinely past it. If your Mac is Intel, you have a separate and more urgent reason, because macOS 27 does not support it.
Do not buy if: your AI use is writing, research, summarising, drafting, and automation through cloud services. Every one of those runs at exactly the same speed on an M1 as it does on an M6, because none of it is running on your Mac at all.
Wait if: you were hoping for a new iMac or MacBook. Apple has moved its desktop announcements out of the way, which suggests the September 9 event is entirely iPhone and Watch.
The cheaper thing to fix first
Here is what I keep running into when people tell me their AI setup feels slow or disappointing. It is almost never the hardware. It is that they are using a general chat box for work that wants a system: the wrong tool for the job, no reusable structure, everything typed from scratch every time, and the same context re-explained on Monday that was explained on Friday.
Fixing that costs nothing and changes more than $300 of silicon will. Fixing it and then upgrading is a reasonable order of operations. Upgrading first and hoping is how you end up with a faster machine and the same problem.
The system, not the silicon

It runs identically on an M1 and an M6, which is rather the point.
It is $49, which is roughly a sixth of the price increase Apple applied to the Mac mini this summer.
None of this is an argument that the M6 is not impressive. It plainly is, and the M5 Ultra is a genuinely remarkable piece of engineering. It is an argument that impressive and necessary are different words, and Apple is counting on you not noticing the gap between them this month.
