5️⃣ THE USEFUL FIVE · FRIDAY ROUNDUP · ISSUE #015
👋 HEY, IT'S RAJA
Apple's event took the headlines this week. These 5 took my attention instead: 4 indie apps that launched or updated this month, and a private AI app that just shipped a big iPhone update.
1️⃣ Whisper Notes, for transcribing anything with no internet at all
Whisper Notes records or imports audio and turns it into text entirely on your iPhone or Mac. Nothing goes to a server, and it works in airplane mode. Its models cover more than 100 languages, and it can tell different speakers apart.
The new iPhone update, 1.9.0, lets you start and stop recording from the Lock Screen, Control Center or the Action button. Hours-long recordings now transcribe on every supported iPhone, and a phone call or alarm pauses a recording instead of ending it. Transcripts can export themselves to Files or iCloud Drive.
On the Mac it adds system-wide voice typing and call recording for Zoom, Teams and Meet. The Mac download is free for up to 5,000 words a week. It's #1 in my roundup of private AI apps that work in airplane mode, and Whisper Notes sponsored that post and this mention.
2️⃣ Ember, for a journal sorted by the people in your life
Most journals file your life by date, while Ember files it by person. Type @ and a name in any entry, and that moment also lands on that person's page, so years from now you can open your sister's page and read your whole history with her.
Worlds group people into circles like family, work and college. A Feed quietly surfaces the people you've drifted from, and on Mac and iPad a graph maps everyone in your journal. It imports from Day One and Apple Journal.
There's no AI reading your entries, no account and no Ember server. The core journal is free on Mac, iPhone and iPad, and the paid upgrade adds sync and themes.
NEW FROM ME
Ember remembers what you write about people, and Textlore remembers what they wrote to you
Textlore is the Mac app I built for your Messages history. Its Promises tab finds the things you told someone you'd do, and shows how many days late each one is. Its Recs tab lists the books, shows, restaurants, songs and apps friends suggested in iMessage or WhatsApp, with who said it and their words.
Both need a Mac with Apple Intelligence on macOS 26 or later, and everything runs locally on your Mac.
Try it free for 14 days, with every feature and no account.
3️⃣ Switchback, for anyone who misses Windows File Explorer
Switchback 1.0 adds the File Explorer habits Finder never had, without replacing Finder. You get a path bar you can type into, an expandable folder tree in the sidebar, copies you can pause and resume, and a Task Manager-style window.
If you moved to a Mac from Windows and still miss typing a folder path straight into the window, this is the one to try.
NEW FROM ME
An iPhone app that picks which watch you wear today
I own more than 30 watches and kept wearing the same 3, so I built Wristkeeper. Each morning it picks one from your box using the weather and how long each watch has waited, and it keeps the cost per wear for every watch (a $25 Casio worn 5 times is $5 a wear).
The beta is open on TestFlight, it's free for up to 3 watches, Pro is free while you test, and it comes to the App Store on 17 Nov.
4️⃣ Weatherling, for weather that happens on your desktop
Weatherling draws animated rain, snow, fog, falling leaves, sunshine and wind across your Mac's desktop and windows. Sync it with Apple Weather and your Mac matches the sky outside. Turn on invert mode and you get sunshine on screen when it's grey outside.
Every effect has its own controls and a performance slider. There's also an optional minigame starring little creatures called Lings, which the developer designs with his kids. It's a one-time purchase for macOS 14 or later, with no subscription.
NEW FROM ME
Make app videos and reels by typing 1 line
Useful Studio is the video kit I built for Claude Code on the Mac. You describe your app or product in 1 line, and it makes a finished launch film, reel or explainer in your own colours, fonts and logo, in both 16:9 and 9:16. Every video on the page was made with it. The launch offer ends Sat 31 Oct.
5️⃣ Flipcorder, for turning your day into a VHS home movie
Flipcorder records your day as 20-second clips on a virtual daily tape. The tape plays back in order as one unedited home movie, up to 30 minutes a day, with a VHS look (colour bleed, tracking wobble, date stamp) or a clean MiniDV finish. Your original clips stay untouched.
It saves each day's tape to Photos as a single movie with a title card. On the new iPhone Duo, folding the phone works as the power switch, but it runs on any iPhone with iOS 26. One-time purchase, no ads and no account.
ALSO WORTH A LOOK
If you've ever copied something, copied something else, and lost the first one, try PastePal.
PastePal keeps everything you copy on your Mac, so the link, the address and the paragraph from 20 minutes ago are all still there. Search your history, pin the snippets you paste every day, and get the same history on your iPhone and iPad through iCloud.
It's #1 in my new roundup of Mac clipboard apps this week.
PastePal sponsored this mention.
Try Flipcorder this weekend, because a Saturday on tape is the easiest way to find out if you'll want a Sunday too. Hit reply and tell me which of the 5 you installed.
See you Monday.
Keep it useful,
