Most people using Claude are stuck for one reason, and it isn't the one they think. It isn't that they can't write a good prompt. It's that they don't know what's possible to ask for. They treat a tool that can reorganize a thousand files and build a working dashboard like a slightly clever search box.
So today, no theory. Here are five prompts I actually use, each one a finished instruction you can paste into Claude on your Mac right now. Steal all five. They'll do more to change how you work than anything I could write about them.

1. The one that cleans the folder you've been avoiding
Everyone has the folder. Mine was Downloads, and it had grown to 230 items of pure chaos. This prompt sorts it while you watch, and crucially, it never deletes anything.
Survey this folder first and tell me what's in it, then propose a plan: a folder per category, year subfolders inside Documents and Images, obvious duplicates into a Duplicates folder, anything you're unsure about into To Review. Nothing gets deleted. Show me the full plan with counts before doing anything.The magic word is plan. You see exactly what it intends to do before a single file moves, and you can change your mind in plain English. I ran this on my real Downloads folder and it sorted all 230 items into clean, labeled folders in about nine minutes.
2. The one that turns a pile of receipts into a spreadsheet
This is the prompt that made me a believer. A folder of receipts, some PDFs, some photos of paper, becomes a categorized expense report in two minutes.
Read every receipt in this folder, including images. Extract date, merchant, amount, and currency from each, categorize it, and build expenses.xlsx with one row per receipt plus a totals row. Anything you can't read clearly goes in needs-review.md instead of being guessed.That last sentence is the whole trick. Telling Claude to flag uncertainty instead of guessing is the difference between a spreadsheet you trust and one you have to audit. Keep that clause in every prompt that processes a pile of anything.
3. The one that reads your data and tells you what to ask
You have more data than you think: bank exports, sales numbers, your fitness log. The reason you never open them is that questioning a wall of rows is intimidating. So don't start with questions. Start here.
Profile this export before any analysis: how many rows, what each column means, which columns have missing or inconsistent values, and anything that looks like a data-quality trap. Don't analyze yet. End with the 5 questions you think this data could answer well.That last line is my favorite trick in my entire library. Someone who just read all your rows knows what's worth asking better than you do. Half my best findings started as Claude's suggested questions, not mine. This exact prompt is how I discovered that 59% of my own revenue comes from repeat readers.
4. The one that turns one article into five
If you make anything, this one compounds. A finished piece contains four or five smaller pieces, and pulling them out used to be a 90-minute chore I resented.
From this finished piece, create: a 200-word newsletter section, a thread of 6 short posts (first one a hook), three single-sentence pull quotes, and a 60-word social teaser. Don't introduce any claims that aren't in the original piece.The "no new claims" rule keeps the repurposed versions honest, so the thread never quietly exaggerates the article. Everything stays true to what you actually wrote.
5. The one you should memorize
This isn't a task prompt. It's the question that unlocks all the others, and it's the whole philosophy in one line. Any time you catch yourself doing something tedious by hand, ask:
I regularly do this by hand: [describe the chore]. Could you do it, or part of it? Be honest about what's a good fit, what isn't, and what you'd need from me. If it's a fit, draft the prompt I'd use.The right question was never "what can a coding tool do for me?" It's "what do I do by hand that Claude could do instead?" Ask it often. The answer is almost always "more than you'd think."
